Teaching

I teach beginner to advanced flutists of all ages. My passion is helping others to discover the joy of flute playing, as well as building a solid foundation of good technique, tone, musicianship and breath control. I am committed to helping students achieve their personal goals and aspirations, whether they are a beginner , an accomplished student preparing for exams, auditions and competitions, or an enthusiastic amateur looking to hone their skills.

Teaching Philosophy and Flute Examinations

I am well-versed with the Canadian Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) exam system , as well as the British ABRSM exam system. I strongly believe it is crucial to develop strong fundamentals including correct breathing technique, finger technique, tone production, articulation and posture. It is much more difficult and time-consuming to correct bad habits than teaching the correct ones from the beginning. I also want my young students to truly discover the joy of classical music-making.

What can I offer to intermediate or advanced students who are seeking to improve their skills and achieve personal goals?

With more advanced students I continue to develop their technical proficiency and solidifying fundamentals with a tailored approach—detailed diagnosis of the aspects of their playing that require the most attention. For instance, for a student who wants to achieve flexible and beautiful tone colours I would suggest using the Moyse “Sonorité” long tone exercises and his Tone Development book which I have found helpful in my education in Canada and Europe.

I also believe it is crucial for my students who want to take their playing to the next level to foster awareness of the subtle nuances of the instrument and the repertoire, including concepts such as phrase structure, intonation and tone colour, giving them the tools to become artists.
