Flute Instruction for All Levels
As a professional flutist with extensive training in both Europe and Canada, I offer high-quality flute instruction for students of all ages and abilities, from beginners to advanced players. My approach focuses on building a solid technical foundation—emphasizing breath control, tone production, technique, and musicianship—while nurturing a deep love and understanding of music. Whether you're just starting, preparing for exams, auditions, and competitions, or refining your skills as an amateur, I am committed to helping each student achieve their personal musical goals.
Teaching Philosophy & Musical Development
With a deep knowledge of both the Canadian Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) and British ABRSM exam systems, I am equipped to guide students through formal examinations if desired. However, I distinguish myself from teachers who focus solely on exam preparation by offering a comprehensive, holistic approach. My teaching goes beyond passing exams; I help students develop a well-rounded musicality by focusing on technique, expression, and musical interpretation.
I believe in the importance of strong fundamentals—diaphragmatic breathing, finger technique , posture, and articulation—as the foundation for long-term success. I also emphasize the development of expressive phrasing, dynamic control, and a deep understanding of musical style and history. This well-rounded approach ensures that students not only become skilled technically, but also develop a rich, expressive musical voice that sets them apart as artists. I also aim to inspire my young students to truly discover the joy of classical music-making, while cultivating qualities such as discipline, problem-solving, and creativity.
Teaching Approach for Intermediate and Advanced Students
For intermediate and advanced students seeking to refine their skills and achieve personal goals, I offer a tailored approach grounded in the prestigious methods I studied in Europe, including those of Marcel Moyse, Paul Taffanel, and Philippe Gaubert. These methods, central to the French flute school, form the foundation of my teaching, ensuring students develop both technical excellence and expressive artistry.
To enhance technical proficiency and solidify fundamentals, I use Moyse’s Sonorité long tone exercises and his Tone Development book, which were integral to my own training. These methods not only improve tone quality but also help students build flexibility and control.
In addition to technical training, I guide students in developing a deeper understanding of musicality, emphasizing phrase structure, intonation, and tone color—essential concepts for those aiming to elevate their playing. By combining these methods with a focus on artistry, students gain the tools to refine their technique and approach music with a deeper, more expressive voice.
